EARTH BUILDING INTERNSHIPS at TUI COMMUNITY in NEW ZEALAND
|
|
From 7 Jan 2006, together with a small team of interns, Robina McCurdy and Huckleberry Leonard, international permaculture designer-educators (for background see www.greenworld-earthcare.org), will be continuing the building of their modest earth home, on Tui land in Golden Bay, top of the South Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand. Tui is a 21 year old intentional community, with a strong social culture and a wholistic educational function. The borders of Tui land include the tidal inlet of Wainui Bay and the beautiful Abel Tasman National Park. We are 15 minutes walk from a calm-water swimming beach.

From early Feb till mid April 2005, 6 - 8 intern earth builders, learned and worked together as a mini-community within the fully functioning wider community of Tui. This summer, we will continue on from where this team left off. We have taken a break over winter and spring, to replenish finances to purchase some materials for the next stage, and also to wait for sufficient enduring warm weather to dry the earth walls and floor, which we will be doing in the next stage. Techniques used will be Cobb, Wattle & Daub and Adobe, with an earth roof. See below for a sampling of plans and pictures. An aspect of the design will be Roundhouse style, as developed by Tony Wrench from Wales.

As with last time, we intend this experience to be a fun, growthful and learningful time together. Hands-on teachers include Earth Building expert Richard Walker (NZ earth architect & consulting engineer, co-wrote the NZ Earthbuilding standards), and Huckleberry (USA) an experienced builder, specializing in old-style timber frame construction, and boatbuilding.
There are already two people booked in for next year. and there is a number limit of 6 - 8 people, accepted on first to confirm basis, given they meet the needs of people required for that particular building stage. Financial exchange ranges from direct work exchange - 3 spaces for people with experience in building construction eg making of windows, plumbing systems, to $180 per week payment for ' complete novices'. All exchanges cover food, accommodation, internet access, some work clothes, educational handout notes.
If you are seriously interested, please respond with the following information: name, nationality, age, male/female, fitness level, building experience (if any), community living/community work experience, stage/dates you are wanting to come for, any special needs/limitations.
